Q&A with OCO Interiors

We sat down with Orlagh from OCO Interiors to chat about the design process behind the stunning new show home at Hobart Hall in Dundonald.

What was the overall vison or theme you wanted to achieve with this show home.

Our goal was to design a welcoming, relaxing space with a warm palette, complimented by quirky, playful elements that make it engaging and relatable for all types of purchasers.

Which room did you start with, and why.

We began with the open-plan kitchen and living area, knowing that this multifunctional space needed to work seamlessly for everyday life.

To enhance flow and functionality, we introduced some bespoke wall panelling that conceals a hidden door into the under stair storage, integrating it in a decorative way. The kitchen was reconfigured to create a more defined island, which in turn allowed us to establish a more spacious dining zone. I wanted this space to feel fresh and inviting but practical, the use of the soft green and other colours really helped achieve this.

How do you balance aesthetic appeal with functionality in a home.

When designing spaces we always have to bear in mind the end use of a space and practicality is so important, especially for family living.

I try to balance aesthetic appeal with functionality by first ensuring that the layout, furniture scale, and flow of each room is practical and demonstrates how the space can be lived in day to day.

Once that foundation is set, I layer in aesthetic elements, such as a cohesive colour palette, soft lighting, curated accessories and artwork that elevate the space without compromising usability.

Which design choices do you think will have the biggest "wow" factor for victors.

I think there are some quirky colours and furniture pieces in areas that work really well and create an atmospheric feeling. For example the WC is particularly striking, featuring off set wall lights, beautiful mosaic tiles and a moody palette.

The home office upstairs was designed to be more than a working space, but doubles up as a cosy reading nook that you could curl up and relax in. I think the bespoke joinery and colour choice works really well, making it feel inviting as well as practical.

My personal favourite piece is the lounge coffee table- it's a real showstopper!
